Claude Design: The Free Canva Killer — Setup Guide

From zero to your first export in under 10 minutes.

Overview

Most people pay $15–$30/month for tools like Canva Pro, Figma, or Adobe Express. Claude provides a design environment capable of producing carousels, decks, Instagram stories, logos, and posters — and every output can be exported directly into Claude Code as a working component.

What You Can Create

  • LinkedIn carousels
  • Pitch decks
  • Instagram stories and posts
  • Logos (wordmark, monogram, symbol-based)
  • Posters and flyers
  • Landing page mockups
  • Any static design you'd normally build in Canva or Figma

Key advantage: every visual output can be converted into a responsive React/HTML/CSS component via Claude Code — no other design tool offers this.

Requirements

  • A paid Claude plan (Pro or Max). The free tier does not provide the full design experience.
  • Access at: https://claude.ai/

Setup Steps

Step 1 — Open Claude

Navigate to https://claude.ai/ and log in to your paid account.

Step 2 — Import Your Design System (Optional)

If you have an existing brand kit, style guide, or Figma export, drag it directly into the chat. Claude will read and apply your colors, fonts, and spacing to all subsequent outputs.

What to include:

  • Brand color palette (hex codes)
  • Logo files (PNG or SVG)
  • Font names
  • Existing designs you want to match

Step 3 — Generate a Design System (If Starting From Scratch)

Paste the prompt below into Claude. It generates a complete design system in under a minute.

Build me a complete design system for [BRAND NAME / NICHE].

Include:
1. A primary color palette (5 colors with hex codes)
2. A secondary / accent palette (3 colors)
3. Typography pairing (heading font + body font from Google Fonts)
4. Spacing scale (4px base)
5. Border radius scale
6. Button styles (primary, secondary, ghost)
7. A sample card component
8. The overall mood / vibe in 3 words

The brand vibe is: [DESCRIBE — e.g. "clean, modern, AI-forward, Apple-meets-Linear"]
The target audience is: [WHO]

Output everything in a single artifact I can reference later.

Tip: Save the output. You will reuse it for every design going forward.

Step 4 — Create Your First Design

Use the prompts below as starting templates. Replace the bracketed placeholders with your content.

Using the design system above, create a 10-slide LinkedIn carousel about [TOPIC].
Hook on slide 1, value on slides 2–9, CTA on slide 10. Vertical format (1080×1350).

Pitch Deck

Using the design system above, build a 12-slide pitch deck for [COMPANY].
Cover the problem, solution, market, traction, team, and ask.
Make slide 1 a strong cover.

Instagram Story

Using the design system above, design a 9:16 Instagram story announcing [WHAT].
Big bold text, one clear CTA at the bottom.
Using the design system above, create 5 logo concepts for [BRAND].
SVG format. Mix of wordmark, monogram, and symbol-based.

Step 5 — Export to Claude Code

Once you have a design you're satisfied with, convert it into a working component:

Export this to Claude Code as a working component.
Make it responsive and production-ready.

Claude outputs clean React/HTML/CSS that can be dropped directly into a website, landing page, or product.

The Core Workflow

  1. Open Claude
  2. Drop in your design system — or generate one using the Step 3 prompt
  3. Request your design using one of the Step 4 templates
  4. Iterate in plain English — "make the headline bigger," "swap accent color to teal," "add a third slide about X"
  5. Export to Claude Code if you need a live component

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a paid Claude plan? Yes. Pro is sufficient for most users. Max is recommended for high-volume production.

Can I use my existing brand assets? Yes. Drop logos, color palettes, and font references directly into the chat. Claude respects them throughout the session.

How do I keep designs consistent across multiple chats? Create a Claude Project and add your design system to the project knowledge. All chats in that project will use it automatically.

Can I edit a design after it's generated? Yes. Describe the change in plain language: "make slide 3 more minimal," "swap the accent color," "add a bullet about X."

Does it support animation or video? Not currently. For motion work, use a dedicated tool. For static design, Claude covers roughly 90% of typical Canva use cases.
